Rhiannon FAQ - 1 : Time Line, Setting Date: Sun, 16 Mar 1997 22:22:08 -0500 Starbase Rhiannon : FAQ Part One: Time Line and setting Prelude: [From ST:Rhi - DS XII] In the months following the Klingon attack of Cardassia, the United Federation of Planets embarked on a program of securing and fortifying their borders, and increasing the security and communication systems along the various neutral areas just beyond the borders, and the various outposts that lie outside the administration of the Federation. One such system, the Cervidae Alces system, located in the vicinity of the Romulan neutral zone and the frontier of the Jarada Emirate, and the location of the Moose Jaw colony and teraforming project, had become exceptionally active in the months preceeding the Klingon attack on Cardassia. Natural resources that were not discovered until well into the teraforming project were going to make the system an important one for commerce and mining. The Federation immediately moved to place a starbase within the system. However, the sudden military build up forced all such plans to be postponed indefinately. Not wanting to leave the Cervidae Alces system without some type of space station or starbase, Vice Admiral Francine Chevitz of starfleet command launched a research project to examine a thus untested alternative... ========== General Information of the Starbase and it's crew can be found at: http://www.patriot.net/users/rjpugh/rhiannon/ Starbase Rhiannon is a different type of Star Trek fan fict, in that it doesn't completly follow the trek pattern of short, intependent stories. Each story will be self-containted, but Starbase Rhiannon is going to become the hub of a long running, multi-story arc. Several interconnected threads will be running beneath the surface, and constantly changing. If that sounds like an imitation (or rip off) of JMS and Babylon-5, it should. Actually, I prefer to think of it as combining the best of Trek and B5. It remains to be seen weather or not I accomplish that. Political intrigue, moral impasses, and all kinds of personal conflict are what Rhiannon has. There will also be the usual helping of action, disgusting characters, shooting and so forth, but that's not going to be the focus. As far as I'm concerned, Deep Space Nine shot itself in the foot when the Klingons took over everything. DS9 went from being a gritty sci-fi with lots of great character development and interaction to just another shoot-um-up. Why? Because televisions audiences don't like great character development and interaction. They like action. In fact, many folks on the various newsgroups have said, in so many words, that they dislike stories with a lot of interaction. I'm hoping that the people reading this have a different outlook. There is also the fact that the writers and producers of DS9 have new financiers, who will do whatever it takes to get a bigger market share, including ruining their "product." There are also rumors that a certain former TNG actor and his agent are effectively bullying the writers of DS9 into making his character the focus of everything, even though that means turning the rest of the cast into pathetic shadows of the interesting characters they used to be. One person I've spoken with about this "mega-arc" has said that what I have is what DS9 was supposed to be or even used to be, until the poor writing killed it. If that's the case, then for all you fans of the "old" Deep Space Nine, you have an second chance. Rhiannon and the Star Trek Canon Don't mix. The Rhiannon stories take place in a slightly different timeline from the canon Star Trek. It has to, becuase my co-writers and I are going to start reeking havok with the political landscape of the Alpha Quadrant. The rest of the Amagosa group may not follow this, so when reading this, keep in mind that at this writing it applies only to the stories in the Rhiannon cycle. It wasn't planned that way; it just happened. The thing is, it will probably deviate more and more as the "long haul" story unfolds. Note that most of these changes, for now, occur on the personal level. The big picture of the Trek universe is still the same, for now, but even that may change. Some of the DS9 episodes from season five simply haven't happened in this timeline, and won't. These canon deviations are listed below, grouped according to the various shows and movies. ===== TOS: * Tewande Uhura, captain of the USS Surak, is the granddaughter of Lt. Uhura ST2: Wrath of Khan *A trill officer was on board the USS Reliant, and during the time that crew was stranded on Ceti-A 5, was compromised by an ear creature. This resulted in some psychological dammage that wasn't detected until well after the creature was removed, and had time to corrupt the symbiont. This becomes the trill that troubles Dax for several generations. ST6: The Undiscovered Country * Nekita Jarok, then a young Federation Secret Service agent, was involved in the clean-up of the Cartright/Ch'ang conspiricy. ST: TNG * Lt. Robin Lefler left the Enterprise shortly after her final appearance in "The Game," going to the Kelrad outpost, then later to a major civil engineering project on the moon. * Wesley Crusher is still out jumping around the cosmos with the Traveler, but has apparently appeared to his mother twice since leaving. He is unaware that he fathered a child with Robin Lefler. * Lt. Ann Singer was a security ensign on the Enterprise from roughly season five to the end of the series. * The command staff of the Enterprise is aware of what Lt. Cmd. Juliet Ray tried to do for the POW's of 1701-C, and were quite disturbed when she was silenced by the Federation Secret Service, and the whole incident burried. ST: Gen * Lt. Ann Singer was on the bridge of 1701-D during the "crash and burn" sequence. It scared her to death, almost literally. * Shortly after "ST: Gen," Jean-Luc Picard was promoted to Vice Admiral, for his "repeated demonstration of superior leadership." * William Riker has recently been promoted to Captain, and is Captain of 1701-E. Picard still uses 1701-E as a flagship, even though it will be Riker's command. * Beverly Crusher took a leave from starfleet, and considered resigning, but didn't. She's having a proverbial "mid life crisis." * Deanna Troi spent several months at the Jupiter Complex on Europa, working on some major medical research projects dealing with mental illnesses. ST: DS9 * Nedian Jarok and Jadzia Dax are long time platonic friends, from before either of them being joined. * For a brief time, Tie Miri worked for Quark as a d'abo girl and card dealer, and she was very good at it. After her fiance beat her up and joined the Maquis, she left for starfleet. * Beeg Carroll worked on DS9 for a time, working with Miles O'Brian on designing and installing the new weapon systems. He was essentially Worf's predecessor as Tactical Officer. * The O'Brian's second child, Miles E. O'Brian Jr., is still growing in Keiko. Kira is not pregnant. That lame surrogate mother plot-boiler stuff never happened in this time line. * Jadzia and Worf had a brief relationship that didn't work out; classic case of different needs. They have reconciled on a certain level, but they aren't exactly good friends. * After a very stormy reconciliation (seen in "First Tile"), Jadzia and Julian Bashir are currently involved, though they don't give any outward indications of it. * Alexander Roshenko is on Earth attending a prestigeous boarding school, and basically making his father (Worf) proud. * Rom and Leeta have an on/off thing going, much to the chagrin of Quark. * The actions of the Tal'Shear and the Obsidian Order prior to their invasion of the gamma quadrant have made the Treaty of Algeron defunct. The Federation has been quietly building ships, like the Apache-class escorts, that use cloaking devices. The Romulans recently became aware of this, and they aren't very happy about it. * [Most of Season five is being ignored in this timeline.] ST: VOY * Khadran Ten Eagles was a sympathiser for Chakotay's maquis cell, and was almost court-martialed for it, but the case never materialized. Khadran was on duty on Deep Space Five when Voyager vanished. * Katherine Janeway was chief of security on the USS Seattle, under then captain Francine Chevitz. She was promoted to full Commander after Wolf- 359, serving as a science officer on another starship (name not yet revealed). * Before he died, the Romulan scientist who encountered Voyager in "Eye of the Needle" did leave instructions for his daughter regarding the messages from the crew of Voyager. Weather or not she has had the chance to relay them or not, remains to be seen. ST: First Contact * [The Borg invastion occured in early December of 2373, and references will be made accordingly.] * As mentioned above, Jean-Luc Picard is now a Vice Admiral, and William Riker a Captain. Picard often uses 1701-E as a flagship, and at the time of the Borg invasion, was with the Enterprise on her maiden voyage. He is not tied to the ship the way Riker is, however. * By the time 1701-E was launched, Deanna Troi had completed her special assignment at the Jupiter medical complex, and Beverly Crusher had returned to active duty. * Juliet Ray, commanding four of the Iroquois ships, took part in the battle with the Borg, and performed admerably. +-------------------------------------------------------------+ |Richard J.
